Course Genius: create and publish a course with AI

  • Updated
Prerequisites

Course Genius is available to any role that can create courses, meaning users who see Create a course in the Courses menu.

Three conditions decide whether a user sees the new Course Genius:

  • Rise Up has turned on the new Course Genius for your platform. Ask your Customer Success Manager.
  • An Administrator has turned on Course Genius in Settings > AI & Adaptive.
  • On platforms with Course Genius licences, the user holds a licence. A platform with no licences keeps Course Genius open to every user who can create courses.

Users without access keep the previous course creation form: a name, a language and a method to pick.

Overview

Course Genius builds a complete Rise Up course with AI, through a conversation. Instead of filling in a generation form, you brief Course Genius as you would brief an instructional designer: it asks for what is missing, drafts an outline, then generates each step once you approve its script.

The Course Genius workflow follows these main stages:

  • 1Describe the course, attach your sources and check the generation guidelines
  • 2Answer Course Genius's questions on audience, objective and language
  • 3Shape the outline of modules and steps, by hand or by asking
  • 4Generate each step: brief, script to validate, then content
  • 5Review the catalogue entry, link skills, configure and publish

Everything Course Genius creates is a regular Rise Up course. It is saved as a draft from your first message and stays editable in Course Genius or in the course editor at any time.

Key elements
  • Panel: the conversation with Course Genius, on the left of the workspace. The course outline sits on the right.
  • Outline: the course's modules and steps. Course Genius drafts it; you can reorder, rename, add or delete anything.
  • Brief and script: for each step, the brief says what it should cover; the script is the plan Course Genius drafts and you validate before any content is generated.
  • Sources: files and web pages Course Genius uses as reference for the whole course.
  • Generation guidelines: a set describing how your organisation speaks (identity, visual brand, video, company context, vocabulary), applied to everything generated.
  • Mentions: typing / in a message points Course Genius at an existing course, module, step, resource or group of learners.
  • Review and publish: the catalogue entry Course Genius writes once every step it can generate has content.

I. Set up Course Genius (Administrators)

Go to: Settings > AI & Adaptive.

Turn on Course Genius

  1. Open the Features activation tab (called Settings on some platforms).
  2. Turn on Course Genius.
  3. Click Save.

Result:  A Course Genius tab appears in AI & Adaptive. It lists the generation guidelines and, on platforms with licences, a Licences block.

Settings > AI & Adaptive: the Course Genius switch.
The tab only appears after saving
The Course Genius tab is displayed only once Course Genius is turned on and the setting is saved.

Assign licences

  1. In the Course Genius tab, go to Licences.
  2. Open Users with a licence and search for users.
  3. Tick the users who should use Course Genius.
  4. Click Save.

The Licences block: select users, then save. The counter shows how many licences are assigned.

Result:  The line under the field shows how many licences are assigned (for example, "1 of 10 licences assigned"). Only these users get the new Course Genius; others keep the previous course creation form.

Licence count
The number of licences is set by Rise Up according to your contract. You cannot tick more users than you have licences. Administrators choose who holds them.

Write your generation guidelines

In the same tab, under Generation guidelines, write your organisation's guidelines (see Section VII). Each card shows how many courses use the set and which sections are left to complete.

A guidelines card: how many courses use the set and which sections are left to complete.
Best practice
Write your guidelines before the first course is created: every course then starts with your organisation's name, tone and visual brand. A platform that has never written guidelines gets a first set, written from its name and logo.

II. Start a course

Go to: Courses > Create a course, or the banner at the top of the Courses page.

Open Course Genius

  1. In Courses > Create a course, select Generate course with Course Genius, then click Configure. Alternatively, click Try Course Genius on the Courses page banner: it opens the same start view.
  2. Under What do you want to teach?, describe the topic, the audience, the goal and the length in your own words.
  3. Add your material: attach files with +, drop them on the field, or paste a link to a web page.
  4. Optionally, type / to mention a course, a module, a step, a resource or a group of learners. Course Genius reads it and builds on it.
  5. Check the guidelines shown under the field and change them if needed.
  6. Send the message.

Courses > Create a course: select Generate course with Course Genius, then Configure.

The Courses page banner: Try Course Genius opens the same start view.

Result:  The course is saved as a draft at once and appears in your Courses list. Course Genius replies with questions about the brief (see Section III).

Best practice
Give your documents in the first message: the outline is then drawn from them rather than from your brief alone. A brief that names the audience, the objective, the length and the format gets an outline at the first try.

On the first visit, a five-step tour explains the message field. Replay it at any time with How to use Course Genius.

Build the course yourself

Click Build course manually under the message field. The outline opens empty and you add modules and steps yourself. Course Genius stays available in the panel for any step you want it to write.

The workspace

Once the outline exists, the page splits in two: the conversation with Course Genius on the left, the course on the right.

  • Panel: drag its edge to widen it, or fold it to a thin rail with the sidebar button; click the rail to bring it back. The panel opens by itself when a message is ready for you to send.
  • Header: shows the course title (New course until Course Genius gives it one), its status (Draft or Published) and when it was last saved.
  • While Course Genius writes: the outline is locked so nothing changes under it. You can type your next message and send it once the answer is finished. Click Stop to interrupt the answer.

Leaving the page
Leaving the page asks you to confirm: anything Course Genius is still writing is lost. The course and the outline already written are kept as a draft; reopen it from the Courses list to carry on.

III. Agree the brief

Before writing anything, Course Genius makes sure it knows who the course is for and what it must enable learners to do. It asks only for what your first message left out: whether you have documents to build from, who the audience is, and what the course should achieve.

  1. Read Course Genius's question in the panel. It restates your brief first.
  2. Answer in your own words, or click one of the suggested answers under its question.
  3. Repeat until Course Genius has enough information.

Course Genius restates the brief and suggests replies. Click one or type your own answer.

Result:  Course Genius starts the outline: modules and steps appear on the right (see Section IV).

Describe the audience with a group

When Course Genius asks who the course is for, click Add a group next to its suggestions, or type / and open Groups. The group is added to your message as a pill. Course Genius reads the selected groups as one audience and shows what it found above its answer:

  • the number of groups and learners analysed (up to 5 groups per message)
  • their average session length and share of mobile use, over the last 90 days
  • their current completion rate

Typing /group and a few letters finds the group; it is added as a pill.

What Course Genius read about the group, shown above its answer.

Course Genius then explains in the conversation what these figures mean for the course design.

Data privacy and visibility
Group figures are totals only. No individual's data leaves Rise Up, and a value shared by fewer than 5 learners is never shown on its own. You only see the groups you are allowed to see; the same applies to courses, modules, steps and resources you mention.

The course language

Course Genius writes the whole course in one language. When needed, it asks which one and suggests answers you can click. The language is shown, and can be changed, on Review and publish (see Section VIII).

IV. Build the outline

Course Genius writes the outline module by module; each module and step appears as it is written. While it writes, the outline is locked and a marker shows where it is working. Once finished, the outline is yours to change.

Finished outline with steps marked Missing content and a dot on each pen
The finished outline: every step to generate shows Missing content and a dot on its pen.

Manage modules

Go to: Add module at the foot of the outline.

Module type What it holds
Online module Asynchronous: holds steps.
Classroom module Synchronous: holds sessions (see Section VI).
Import module A module copied from another course.
Add module options: Online module, Classroom module and Import module
Add module: an online module, a classroom module, or a module imported from another course.
  •  The pen opens the module: rename it and edit its settings in the usual module form, then click Save.
  • Drag a module by its handle to move it.
  •  The bin deletes the module, with all its steps and their data.

Manage steps

Go to: the foot of each module.

  • Ask Course Genius to generate a step: a message naming the module lands in the panel. Send it as it is, or adjust it first.
  • Create a step: pick a format under Native steps or Third-party steps, or Import steps from the library.
  • Each step shows its format and its status beside its name. A dot on its pen means the step is waiting for you.
  • Drag a step to move it within its module. The bin deletes it.

Just ask
You can also change the outline from the panel, for example: "Add a 5-question quiz at the end of module 2", "Split module 3 in two" or "Make the course shorter".
Generate course stays greyed out
The Generate course button at the foot of the outline stays greyed out until every step Course Genius can generate has its content, and its tooltip says why. Steps you fill by hand, such as a document or a SCORM package, never hold it back.

V. Generate the steps

Go to: the outline > pen on a step marked Missing content.

Generate a step

  1. Click the pen on the step. The step opens and asks What should this step cover?
  2. Check the Name and the Brief, both pre-filled from the outline. Adjust them and attach a document if useful.
  3. Click Generate step, or Build step manually to fill the step yourself.
  4. Course Genius may ask you a question, then drafts a script (status Writing script). The step then shows Waiting for response.
  5. Read the script in the panel, then click Validate and continue to start the generation, or Make changes to tell Course Genius what to change first.

Nothing is generated before you approve
Content is only produced after you click Validate and continue. A step takes a few minutes to generate and runs in the background: open other steps meanwhile. Each step keeps its own conversation.

Change a generated step

A generated step is a regular step. Change it by hand or let Course Genius change it for you.

  • By hand: Edit step opens the format's usual form, right in the step. Preview step shows it as learners will. Click Save to keep your changes.
  • With Course Genius: ask in the step's conversation. Course Genius edits the page in place (status Editing content) and you see it change on screen.
  • Formats Course Genius does not generate open on their own page: name the step and add its content there, for example upload a SCORM package or select H5P content.
Edit step opening the quiz form with settings, questions and answers
Edit step opens the format's usual form.

Leaving a step with unsaved changes asks you to confirm. Generating a step again never touches the other steps, and a step being regenerated keeps its current content until the new content lands.

VI. Schedule classroom sessions

Go to: a Classroom module in the outline.

A classroom module holds sessions instead of steps. When you ask Course Genius for a session, a request naming the module lands in the message field: add the date, place and seats, then send. How sessions are organised depends on whether your platform uses course sessions.

Ask Course Genius to generate a session puts a message naming the module in the field.
With course sessions Without course sessions
How it works A course session gives learners one session on every classroom module. A learner registers to one course session per course. Sessions belong to their module. A learner registers to one session per module.
Create Generate a course session asks Course Genius; Create a course session creates one and opens it. Ask Course Genius to generate a session, or Create a session.
Manage In a course session: its name, available seats, sessions and waiting list. Manage course sessions lists them all. The pen opens the module's Classroom sessions: edit, duplicate or delete each one. Face-to-face or virtual, with dates, place, room and seats, in the usual session form.
Example requests "Create two course sessions of 15 learners each."
"Schedule every course session's sessions from 9:00 to 17:00."
"Create 3 sessions next week from 17:00 to 18:00."
"Duplicate the last session for every Monday this month."

A classroom module shows Missing content until its sessions are complete.

VII. Manage sources and generation guidelines

Sources

Everything you give Course Genius becomes a source for the whole course: it draws the outline from it and uses it for every step. Add sources at any time from the message field:  attach files with +, drop them on the field, or  paste a link to a web page. A step's brief can also take documents, used for that step only.

Course Genius reads documents, slides and spreadsheets, transcribes audio, analyses video and describes images. A SCORM package is read into text, which can take a few minutes.

  • See the sources, at the top of the panel, lists every document and website of the course. Click it again to return to the conversation.
  • From that view, upload more files or add a website address.
  • Delete a document and Course Genius stops using it for this course. Content already generated from it stays as it is.
See the sources view with the file drop zone and website address field
See the sources: the course's documents and websites, and where to add more.
SCORM packages
A SCORM package can only be given to the course conversation, not to a step. File formats and size limits are listed in Section X.

Generation guidelines

A set of guidelines carries an organisation's identity into every course generated with it. It has five sections, each showing Complete, In progress or Not started:

Section What it defines
Identity The organisation's name, what it does and who it serves.
Visual brand Logo, palette, default font, art direction of images and video scenes, up to 6 reference images, and what never to show.
Video Format (landscape or portrait), presenter, voice, music and how terms are pronounced in video and podcast narration.
Company context Sector, size, countries, languages and laws; roles; internal tools; policies and contacts; pedagogy and accessibility needs.
Instructions & vocabulary The tone, the words to use and to avoid in every generated text, and the platform glossary if turned on.

Go to: the guidelines menu under any message field (start view, panel, or a step's brief).

  1. Open the menu and pick a set, or No guidelines. Course Genius applies it from its next answer.
  2. To adapt a set, click the pen on it to open the editor. To create one, click New guidelines, then Save and use to save it and apply it to the course.
  3. To manage all sets, click Manage guidelines: Settings > AI & Adaptive > Course Genius > Generation guidelines opens in a new tab, where you can edit, duplicate or delete a set.
Guidelines menu with sets, a pen to edit each, No guidelines and New guidelines
The guidelines menu: pick a set, edit it with the pen, or start New guidelines.

Changes apply to every course using the set
Editing a set changes it for every course that uses it; the editor shows how many. Courses using a deleted set are generated without guidelines from then on. Guidelines cannot be changed while Course Genius is writing, so a running step keeps the set it started with.

A new course opens on the set you chose last.

Best practice
Fill in the Video section before generating video lessons: format, presenter, voice and music come from it.

VIII. Review and publish

Go to: Generate course at the foot of the outline (available once every step Course Genius can generate has content).

  1. Click Generate course. Course Genius writes the catalogue entry in about a minute, then opens Review and publish.
  2. Check and complete each block (see table below). The Before publishing checklist ticks itself as you fill the page; click an item to jump to it.
  3. Click Preview to see the course as a learner.
  4. Click Publish course, or Save to keep your changes without publishing.

Result:  The course is published, or a validation request is sent if your role requires one, and the course's management page opens. Everything stays editable after publishing.

Block What you set
Identity Image (500 × 500 px recommended), banner (1800 × 450 px), title, description, language and teaching time. Ask Course Genius in the panel to rewrite any part.
Skills Manage skills links or removes skills. Each linked skill drives an evaluation through positioning tests, or reinforcement through Memorisation, which you can switch on there.
Advanced configuration Edit configuration opens the course settings: visibility, registrations, certificates and other settings, as in the course editor.
Follow-up Forge coaching On platforms with Forge, Enable coaching adds an AI coach set up from your brief. It takes over when learners finish the course.

Empty catalogue entry
If the catalogue entry comes back empty, reload the page. If it is still empty, fill in the fields yourself.

A published course reopened with Course Genius shows Manage course instead of Publish course.

IX. Reopen a draft or improve an existing course

Go to: Courses list > Edit on a course you can edit.

A course started with Course Genius is a draft from the first message and sits in your Courses list like any other course. Edit opens a menu with two choices. You can switch between them at any time: both work on the same course.

Courses list: Edit offers Edit manually and Edit with Course Genius.
Option What opens
Edit with Course Genius A draft reopens where you left off: the outline, a step waiting for you, or the review, with its conversation. Any other course, built with Course Genius or not, opens on its outline with Course Genius in the panel.
Edit manually The course editor, as for any course. Generated steps are regular steps there: every field can be changed.
  • The menu is shown to users who can use Course Genius, on courses they can edit that are not archived.
  • The header of a reopened course shows Draft or Published, and when it was last saved.

To find every course started with Course Genius, tick Generated with Course Genius in the Courses list filters.

X. Reference: formats, statuses and limits

Step formats

Course Genius picks the format that fits each step, or uses the one you choose. Formats filled by hand never block Generate course.

Format What you get Content

H5P, Ubicast, Elucidat, Question mix and external tools are offered only on platforms where they are turned on.

Statuses

Statuses show beside each step in the outline and on the step's own page. Classroom modules, sessions and course sessions use Missing content and Validated too.

Status What it means What to do
Missing content The step has no content yet. A step Course Genius can generate holds back Generate course. Generate it or fill it by hand.
Writing script Course Genius is drafting the script, with its progress. Wait, or keep working elsewhere.
Waiting for response A script or a question waits for you. A dot shows on the step's pen. Validate and continue, or Make changes.
Generating content The content is being produced, with its progress. Wait, or keep working elsewhere.
Editing content Course Genius is changing the page you asked about. Watch the page change.
Still generating The run continues without the page following it. Reopen the course later.
Generation failed The run stopped. Course Genius says why in the conversation. Retry, or edit by hand.
Validated The step has its content. Nothing to do.

File formats and limits

The same limits apply wherever you give a file: the message field, the sources view or a step's brief.

Kind Formats Limit

Number of files Any No limit

FAQ & Troubleshooting

  • Issue: Create a course opens the previous form, without the new Course Genius.
Solution: Course Genius is off on your platform, or your platform uses licences and you do not hold one. Ask your Administrator to turn on Course Genius in Settings > AI & Adaptive (Section I) or to assign you a licence.

Issue: The Course Genius tab does not appear in Settings > AI & Adaptive.
Solution: The tab appears only once Course Genius is turned on in the Features activation tab (called Settings on some platforms) and the setting is saved. If the switch is not available, ask your Customer Success Manager to turn on the new Course Genius for your platform.

Issue: An Administrator cannot tick another user in Users with a licence.
Solution: All licences are assigned. Remove a licence from another user, or contact your Customer Success Manager: the number of licences depends on your contract.

Issue: Generate course is greyed out.
Solution: Hover the button: its tooltip says why. "Add at least one step first" means the outline has no step yet: add one (Section IV). Otherwise, a step Course Genius can generate still shows Missing content, or Course Genius is writing. Classroom sessions never block Generate course or Publish course.

Issue: A step shows Generation failed.
Solution: Read the reason Course Genius gives in the step's conversation, then click Retry in the panel, or edit the step by hand.

Issue: A step shows Still generating, or the message "… is taking longer than expected. Reload the page in a moment to see the result."
Solution: The run continues on its own. Reload the page or reopen the course later; the content lands in the step.

Issue: "The content was produced but could not be stored on the training."
    Solution: Click Store it again.

Issue: "The assistant produced a …, a format the training cannot carry yet. Ask it for another format."
Solution: Ask Course Genius for another format in the step's conversation.

Issue: "Too many conversations opened in a short time."
Solution: Wait a minute, then open the step again.

Issue: "{file} is too large: the limit is … MB."
Solution: Reduce the file or split it. Limits are 50 MB for documents, audio and video, 25 MB for images and 1 GB for SCORM packages (Section X).

Issue: "{file} is a SCORM package. Add it to the course outline instead."
Solution: SCORM packages are accepted only in the course conversation, not in a step's brief. Send the package from the course conversation.

Issue: "The catalog entry could not be generated. Fill it in yourself, or try again.", or the catalogue entry is empty.
Solution: Try again or reload the page. If it is still empty, fill in the Review and publish fields yourself.

Issue: "The course was published, but the coach could not be created."
Solution: The course is live. Create the Forge coach from the course's management page.

Issue: A course's tone or branding changed unexpectedly.
Solution: The guidelines set it uses was edited, which affects every course using that set, or the set was deleted and the course is now generated without guidelines. Check the guidelines menu under the message field and pick a set.

  • Is a course created with Course Genius different from a regular course?
    — No. It is a regular Rise Up course. You can open it in the course editor with Edit manually, and every generated step can be changed there.

Can I use Course Genius on a course built by hand?
    — Yes. On any course you can edit that is not archived, Edit > Edit with Course Genius opens its outline with Course Genius in the panel.

Is my work lost if I close the page?
    — No. The course is saved as a draft from your first message, with the outline already written. Only what Course Genius is still writing when you leave is lost: reopen the draft and ask again.

Does Course Genius generate content without my approval?
    — No. For each step, Course Genius drafts a script and waits for Validate and continue before generating content.

Can individual learners' data be seen when I mention a group?
    — No. Course Genius shows totals only. No individual's data leaves Rise Up, and a value shared by fewer than 5 learners is never shown on its own. You can only mention groups you are allowed to see.

What happens to content generated from a source I delete?
    — It stays as it is. Course Genius simply stops using the deleted document for the rest of the course.

Can a course be generated in several languages?
    — Course Genius writes the whole course in one language. You can check and change it on Review and publish.

Does regenerating a step affect the rest of the course?
    — No. Generating a step again never touches the other steps, and the step keeps its current content until the new content lands.

Why does Publish course send a validation request instead of publishing?
    — Your role requires validation before publication. The request is sent and the course's management page opens.
