Designer access (or an equivalent course-editing role) is required to add and configure these steps within a course. Administrator access is required to enable each step type.
Administrator access controls:
- Enabling the feature flag for each step type — Mini game, Role play, Cards, and HTML are released and can be activated independently of one another.
- Reviewing which HTML tags and scripts are permitted in the HTML step, as this depends on your platform's security configuration.
- Confirming whether learner scores and completion for these steps appear in your existing tracking and reporting views.
Contact your Administrator if a step type described in this article does not appear in your course editor, or if you need it activated.
Four new online step types are available for your courses: Mini game, Role play, Cards, and HTML. They can be added to any online course, whether the course was built manually or generated by the AI-driven course creation tool.
These step types close a gap between AI-generated content and native course delivery: several content formats produced by AI course generation previously had no direct Rise Up equivalent. With these four step types, a generated training can be edited and delivered natively, without manual reformatting.
Working with the new steps follows these main stages:
- 1An Administrator enables the feature flag for the step type(s) your organisation wants to use
- 2A Designer adds the step to an online course and configures its content
- 3The Designer previews the step as a learner would see it
- 4Learners complete the step from web or mobile and see their result immediately
- 5Completion and, where applicable, scores are recorded against the learner
Each step type is released independently behind its own feature flag, so you can activate and demo one without affecting the others.
- Feature flag: a per-step-type activation switch. Each of the four step types is turned on independently.
- Mini game step: a true/false question game with four playable formats — Swipe, Blitz, Ladder, and Streak. Outputs an accuracy score.
- Role play step: a spoken conversation between the learner and an AI on a topic defined by the Designer. Outputs an AI-generated overview and a proficiency score.
- Cards step: a single step covering flash cards, scratch cards, and a carousel view, differentiated by the display mode chosen at configuration.
- HTML step: a step whose content is authored directly as HTML, subject to your platform's sanitisation and script policy.
- Score: for Mini game and Role play only. Mini game score is the learner's accuracy; Role play score is determined by the AI based on the learner's demonstrated proficiency on the topic.
I — Add a Mini game step
Go to: the course editor of an online course > add a step > Mini game.
- Select one of the four available game formats (see table below).
- Add your true/false questions — up to 20 questions per step.
- Mark each question's correct answer as True or False.
- Preview the game as a learner would experience it, then save the step.
| Format | How it plays | Pass condition |
|---|---|---|
| Swipe | The learner selects the correct answers. 3 lives; a life is lost on a timeout or a wrong answer. Points are earned on correct answers, with bonus points for streaks. | 1,000 points |
| Blitz | The learner answers as many true/false questions as possible within 60 seconds. Streaks earn more points. | 1,000 points |
| Ladder | A correct answer climbs one step on the ladder; a wrong answer drops the learner back two steps. | Reach level 8 |
| Streak | 3 lives. A correct answer adds to the learner's streak; a wrong answer costs a life. The game ends when no lives remain. | A streak of 10 or more |
Result: The step appears in the course for learners on web. Mobile display and native interactions for this step were still being finalised at the time of writing — confirm current mobile availability with your account team before relying on it for a mobile-first rollout.
II — Add a Role play step
Go to: the course editor of an online course > add a step > Role play.
The learner has an interactive spoken conversation with an AI. The Designer's role is limited to defining what the conversation should cover — the AI leads the discussion with the learner directly.
- Enter the topics the AI conversation should cover in the text field.
- Optionally, upload a supporting document for the AI to draw on during the conversation.
- Save the step.
Result: After completing the conversation, the learner sees the AI-generated overview of the exchange and a proficiency score determined by the AI. Mobile support for this step was still being finalised at the time of writing — confirm current mobile availability with your account team.
III — Add a Cards step
Go to: the course editor of an online course > add a step > Cards.
This single step type covers flash cards, scratch cards, and a carousel view — the display mode you choose determines how learners interact with the content.
- Choose a display mode: flash cards, scratch cards, or carousel.
- Add up to 10 cards. For each card, enter a title and a rich text body, which can include images and videos, as in other rich text fields on the platform.
- Reorder cards as needed, then save the step.
Result: Learners browse through the cards in the display mode you selected. This step has been rebuilt for native mobile display and interactions, and does not produce a score — only completion is tracked.
IV — Add an HTML step
Go to: the course editor of an online course > add a step > HTML.
- Paste or write your HTML content into the step's content field.
- Preview the step to check that it renders as expected.
- Save the step.
Result: On web, the HTML renders directly as the step's content. On mobile, the step is rendered inside an iframe, and learner interaction with it is still tracked. A dedicated mobile preview in the editor — to help you catch mobile display issues before publishing — was under consideration at the time of writing. This step does not produce a score; only completion is tracked.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Cause | Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| A step type does not appear when adding a step. | Its feature flag has not been activated for your organisation. | Ask your Administrator to enable the feature flag for that step type. Each step type is activated independently. |
| Part of the HTML step's content does not display. | The tag, attribute, or script was removed by the platform's sanitisation policy. | Simplify the HTML and re-check the preview. Contact your Administrator or Rise Up to confirm which tags and scripts are currently allowed. |
| A Mini game or Role play step shows no score. | The learner has not completed the activity, or the AI-generated score for a Role play conversation has not yet been processed. | Ask the learner to complete the full activity. If a Role play score is still missing after completion, contact support. |
| Mini game, Role play, or HTML step behaves differently on mobile than expected. | Mobile behaviour for these step types was still being finalised or refined at the time of writing. | Check with your account team for the current state of mobile support for that step type before relying on it for a mobile-first rollout. |
FAQ & Troubleshooting
-
Issue: A Designer cannot select one of the new step types when adding a step.
Solution: The feature flag for that step type has not been enabled. Ask an Administrator to activate it — each of the four step types is switched on independently.
Issue: A learner reports the Mini game step feels unfair or too hard to pass.
Solution: Check the game format selected for the step and the number of questions provided. The pass condition (points, level, or streak) is fixed per format and cannot be adjusted, but the questions and their difficulty can be edited.
Issue: The Role play step doesn't seem to follow the intended topic.
Solution: Review the topic text and, if used, the uploaded supporting document — the AI conversation is driven entirely by these two inputs.
Issue: HTML pasted into the HTML step doesn't render as expected.
Solution: The content may have been sanitised. Confirm which tags and scripts are permitted with your Administrator or Rise Up before relying on complex or scripted HTML.

Can I activate only some of the four step types?
— Yes. Each step type — Mini game, Role play, Cards, and HTML — ships behind its own feature flag and can be enabled and demoed independently of the others.
Which of these steps produce a score?
— Mini game and Role play produce a score. Mini game score is the learner's accuracy. Role play score is determined by the AI based on the learner's proficiency on the topic. Cards and HTML track completion only.
Can these steps be used outside of AI-generated courses?
— Yes. All four step types can be added manually to any online course, regardless of how the course was created.
How many questions or cards can I add?
— Up to 20 true/false questions for a Mini game step, and up to 10 cards for a Cards step.
Are these steps available on mobile?
— The Cards step has been rebuilt for native mobile display, and the HTML step renders on mobile inside an iframe with tracking supported. Mobile support for Mini game and Role play was still being finalised at the time of writing — check with your account team for the current status.
Will completion and scores for these steps show in my existing reports?
— This is expected but should be confirmed for your platform version. Contact support if you don't see data for these steps in your usual tracking views. -
